Sekine Bicycle Database

In an effort to better decode the Sekine serial numbers, I set about collecting as many numbers as I could and organizing them into a database. Why do this? Because the more numbers collected, the more accurate the underlying pattern becomes. As part of the process, I track other things about the bicycles- like decaling and components- because these help inform the bigger picture. Eventually I hope to find out why a certain decal was used one year and not the next- likewise with lugs, paint, and even models.

For the database to be successful, I need a little bit of help from every Sekine owner. I don't post or share the numbers without permission, and the serial is something every owner should have written down anyway.

just barely legible

Start with the serial number. Sekine serial numbers are stamped underneath the bottom bracket, and will follow one of two codes: Code 1 is a letter/number followed by numbers, like Y6 22222, and Code 2 is numbers followed by a letter/number, like 22222 B6. Spaces count. Sometimes the numbers will be hard to read, with either the top or bottom edges cut off by a weak stamp; for example in a particular series the number 8 will look like an X.
Other frame details that are nice to know are if it came with a chrome-tipped fork, if the frame has chromed ends, if it has plain stamped drop outs, what colour it is, and if it has brazed or clamp-on cable guides. Some of the frames also have different lugs, depending on model and year.

Next important is frame marking. A few clear, well-lit photographs really help, but the following details are important:
- Headbadge: is it the CS Jewel, one of the Medialles, or the rarer Maple Leaf?
- Down Tube Decaling: Does it say "World Finest Bicycle Made by Sekine", or 'SEKINE' in art deco lettering, or the modern SEKINE font?
- Seat Tube Decaling: Does it have a made in Japan or Canada sticker, a cro-mo tubing sticker, and which of the seat tube 'crests' does it have?

Would the owner of this beautiful red mixte please contact me?
Finally we get to the components. Component dating can be useful, but is not definitive. Components can always be switched or upgraded, substituted, and the bike could even have been assembled with old parts. The most reliable part stamps seem to be the cranks and stem, but usually Shimano parts (after 1976) have date stamps as well.
- Cranks are easy- look on the back, near the spindle. SR brand cranks will have numbers in a small circle, like (9/6) or (77H). Often hard to read.
- SR stems have a similar date code stamped in a circle, below the 'minimum insertion' line.
- Shimano parts have two letter codes stamped onto the backs, like EJ or FC.
See this website for more information on dating components: Vintage Component Dating

  7. Here are the serial numbers and my best guess as model on Sekine bikes & frames in my possession:
SIU 272 - 1157 BX You can see it on my wordpress blog: http://lomaparkpeter.wordpress.com/
Best guess SHT, #Y1139192, frame and forks only, stripped down by a someone who claimed the fork was bent, and he calls himself a bicycle recycler.
Last item, Verona with two rows of letters/numbers stamped on the down tube. Hard to read the first row due to curvature of tube and heavy layering of paint but my guess is DS80 and the second row of numbers is 604462.

  10. Just bought a Sekine at a neighbor's yard sale. He said somebody gave it to him. Has "Made in Japan" on seat tube, "World Finest Bicycle Made by Sekine" on down tube. SunTour derailleurs - Spirt front, Vista (?) rear, barcon shifters. Maxy cranks. Sunshine hubs. Dia Compe brakes/levers, stem has nothing visible but "Compe" and "Forged" on top of clamp. Nothing visible on bar. Brooks saddle. Decent shape, but needs to be gone through when I get time. Guy was going to give it to me, but I made him take $20. Doesn't match anything I've been able to find online. -Dan

  29. I bought a Sekine ladies bike for $95, the front Araya 26x1-3/8" rim and tire are destroyed but the rest of it is near-mint. Made in Canada seat-tube sticker, pearl white paint, cruiser bars, 5-speed. The serial number is 0373 D6. The Shimano part date codes tell me 1980 from the deraileur (EI), and 1977 from the brake levers (BJ). It has no model name anywhere on it. It has white plastic hand grips with little red "dot" reflectors that look like they could be original.

One I bought in 73, blue with chrome forks, serial 65491, rear brake cable on right, no "sekine" on rear wheel guard, Sun Tour gear set, handlebar shifters (option I requested at purchase). I believe it was a GS.
Second is all pearl white - no chrome, serial B1 3054, rear brake cable on left, "sekine" on rear chain guard, Shimano gear set.

  32. I have a green Sekine Serial # Z92888 I received new in the late 70's from Tuxedo Cycle and Sports in Calgary. It has the following components:

Shimano Tourney center pull quick release brakes
Alloy levers with what we called coaster brakes
    Shimano Thunder Bird derailer
    Shimano Lark rear derailer
    Quick release wheels
    Chrome tip forks
    SR crank arms and handlebar

Unfortunately the rear wheel and cassette are no longer with the bike. The rim was damaged and I replaced the whole assembly back in the 80's. I put a lot of hard miles on this bike. I rebuilt it a few years ago and it is quite functional.

I would be interested in purchasing the correct parts if anyone has them. I am actively riding again as a commuter.

Gold frame in 25"size with chromed fork and frame ends. Jewel headbadge, "World Finest Bicycle Made By Sekine" on downtube and "Chrome Molybdenum Tubing and Distributed by Beacon Bicycle" and small "Made in Japan"decal on seattube. BB Serial No. is W 77747. Seat lug has "6099" stamped on it, perhaps "6049".

SR alloy stem, Sakae Custom Road Champion alloy bars, DiaCompe brake levers with extension levers, cantilever brakes with "Cherry" on bolts, funky Suntour stem quick release.

Suntour downtube shifters with white plastic covers, Suntour "Spirt" front der (marked Maeda Industries, Ltd. Japan OE 4532"), Suntour V rear der, Sugino Maxy suaged cranks (marked "Forged 165 47-4").

Rims are steel and marked "27x1 1/4 (H.P.), Made in France, Rigida Chromag SuperChromix", Normandy hubs, QR skewers marked "MM Atom", Sekine pie plate.

Unmarked steel seatpost, "Ariake, Made in Japan" vinyl saddle.

The Serial # on the bottom is W65897 and is Olive Green. Replaced the back tire (rubber) last year from the original tire/tube and now a couple of spokes have snapped from rusting/corroding away.

  42. I purchased my Sekine in the 70s. Now I am trying to identify the exact model and year after all this time.

I believe it to be from 1973 or earlier as it has the Made in Japan and Worlds Finest Bicycle logos on the seat tube. The downtube has SEKINE in plain font. The crank set says 6 over 3 which seems to fit, and the general date fits with when I should have bought it.

My problem is the model. The head badge is missing (why I don't know)so I am trying to determine whether it is an SHB/C or an SHT.

It has double butted chrome moly tubing frame with chromed fork ends and chain stays, SR headset and Road Champion bars, SR cotterless crankset, Shimano Titlist front and rear derailleurs w Shimano Finger Tip down tube friction shifters and Shimano Tourney centre pull brakes. Serial is X4 09289.

  58. I have what I believe to be a 1972 Sekine (original owner informed me that he bought it new in Massachusetts in 1972). It has the "Made in Japan" sticker but no "World Finest" decal. SN is W 96558. Other than the tires, I don't think the owner ever changed anything on this bike.

    Details:

Frame: "TNG Cr Mo Double Butted Frame Tubes" (per seat tube sticker), pink paint, with chrome fork ends and seat and chain stay ends. Lug at top of seat tube stamped with JIS (Japan Industrial Standards) logo and "6099". Downtube decal "SEKINE"; Seat tube decal (long white decal with rainbow bands top and bottom) displaying "CHROME MOLYBDENUM TUBING 2010", a fanciful coat of arms design, "SEKINE" and "DISTRIBUTED BY BEACON CYCLE" (Bob Fluhr's Milwaukee-based import company). Diamond-shaped headbadge with rhinestone.

Cranks: Sugino Maxy "Forged 185 47-6" (and "47-7")(I understand the Sugino code 47 also points to 1972).

Deraileurs: rear - Suntour V (stamped "Maeda Industries Ltd Japan OG" (I also understand Suntour code OG points to 1972, July); front - Suntour Spirit. Downtube shifters, cable lead clamps and jockey wheels all labeled Suntour.

Chain: each link marked "D.I.D." (Daido)

Brakes: Dia Compe center pull marked "Dia Compe drop forged' (in red). Brake levers (regular ones and "turkey levers")and cable leads all marked Dia Compe; Brake pads labeled "Compe Compe Compe".

    Rims: Ukai, marked "Ukairims 27 X 1 1/4 w/o".

Hubs: Marked "Sunshine 5345" Wheel quick releases marked with swishy "S" logo.

    Stem: Sakae Ringyo "SR"

Bars: "Sakae Ringyo Custom" "Road Champion" Bar end caps "Fujita Saddle Mfg Co Ltd" with Fujita logo.

Saddle: Taiyo (with attached frame that supports a black vinyl tool bag with turn button closures).

    Pedals: No marks

Misc.: Cateye reflectors ("RR-350" and "RR-210", Swiss-made Pletscher rat-trap rack, REG-style spring-loaded bidon holder (no marks) with "SpA Biemme Bologna" bidon, all likely added at the LBS when purchased, I assume.

  59. I have 2 Sekine "Blacky" bikes. Both are missing the seat and post. Hard to believe that the previous owner doesn't know what he did with them. I would like to buy 2 seats+ posts. Can anyone help me with this?

  60. I have a SEKINI serial # Y2 1238 which I bought in @1978
The bike was not the base model but I am hoping someone can tell me what it is...here are some features it has:
    - royal blue in colour and the sekini decal is not the block style but more
of a thin script font of some sort
    - chrome front and rear fork tips and chain
    - alloy wheels with quick release
    - alloy centre pull quick release brakes
    - alloy brake handles
    - alloy "SR" crank set
    - alloy handlebars with markings that say
    "SR" "ROAD CHAMPION" "SAKAE CUSTOM"
    - alloy frame
    - rear wheel axle position adjusting screws
    - down tube alloy shifter handles that are longer than the standard ones.
    - Shimano Titlist derailleurs
I'm sure I might be missing some things I could mention, but I bought this bike new in @ 1978 and am about to restore it.
Would anyone know what the paint colour would be so I can try to match it?
What font was used for the Sekini decal? (not the block style as I mentioned)
And on this model was there a decal on the tube going from the seat down to the crank? If so any idea if it's possible to get one or a picture of one?
Any help would be appreciated !
    Thanks.
    Grant

    Serial number 2830c3.
Can you tell me anything about it?

  64. Hello, I've picked up a 1974 HST, an opalescent white in colour. It's completely original. Was bought in 1975, ridden for about 50km. and put into storage in a temperature controlled basement for 43 years. Everything is original, including the tires. I renewed the cables, disassembled the bearings and all components and re- assembled it. It is the nicest looking bike in my stable.

  65. Finally getting around to posting. Got my 2 Sekines in Oct 2018 from the original owner from Michigan. Will be selling both. The first is a 1975 - SHS 271. Serial # Y1112361. Seems to be all original (exc. tires & bar tape) as per catalog specs above. Too big for me but can tell this was a well made bike w/ quality components in the day. It has been well maintained and still is in EXCELLENT condition. email me if interested in photos or additional info.

It is black...Champion No.2 frame and forks.
Forks are chromed but the rear stays are not.
It has a complete 12 speed Shimano groupset and Dia-Compe brakes.
Initially thought it was an SHT but now I'm thinking its maybe an RM-12?
There's very little info on the RM-12

  75. Hi Rod and friends,

I came across this page looking for the owner’s manual for the Sekine bike I bought used about a month ago. Wow, does it ever fly. I’m fairly new to bike maintenance and what not and thought I would pick this one up as a project bike. Brakes are stiff and sticky and can’t shift into 10th gear so now that exams are done, I have a couple months to tinker around with this bike.

Can't figure out how to post a picture of it in this forum but it is Blue with the Medallion Headbadge.

    My serial is 1796C7.

  78. Hi! I am wondering if you could tell me a little more about my bike. I have a red made in Canada Sekine with all sorts of bells and whistles. It has a Norco speedometer and odometer (with 127 km on it!), a friction light, 2 leg stand and mat silver fenders. The rear reflector is side mounted. It has a diamond shaped head medallion with a black background, fancy silver circle bit with a stylised CS in the middle. The decals are in the smooth 70s font. I think the serial number is z66716. I am not entirely sure about the 1 and the last 6. The 1 seems really short. It could be a Y or a P. Thanks!

  79. I have a dynamic blue made in Japan Sekine. Serial number W106536. Forks and rear stays are chromed. Cro-moly double butted frame, TNG. The frame is super nice, I upgraded the components to best from Japan at that time. Of all of the bikes I have ever owned it is my favorite, frame fits me perfect for fast riding. I feel very lucky that I stumbled across this beauty, I will never sell it.

  80. I have a beautiful Sekine Medialle s/n Z76661 that was a garage sale find. It's golden yellow in color, has chrome forks, Shimano Lark STO rear derailleur,  GTO Thunder Bird front derailleurs, SR crank with 86 in the circle and 87 on the other side, SR Stem & Champion bars, Shimano Tourney brakes. Shimano fingertip down tube shifter, Original Sekine saddle, made in Canada Decals,  Capri Speedometer, very cool vintage shimano wheel wingtips and brackets throughout. I added new tubes and gum-wall tires, cables and housings and Bar tape. I think it is early 1970's but not sure any info would be helpful. I'm opened to selling and wondering what a fair asking price would be more pictures available by request.

  84. I have had my sky blue Sekine from new since 1974ish. Its still in like new condition but it has 10s of thousands of miles on it. in my teens and early 20s I rode all over Ontario with this bike. From Dorset to London and Port Perry to Fergus , as well as the GTA and Ottawa area. I've seen much of Ontario from that saddle. I had to replace the back wheel at one point and turned it inti a 12 speed which gave me a better range of speeds .
Its still hanging in a nice dry place and I've had it out a few times recently. I just looked at the airplane hanger the Sekine factory was in on Google maps.. What a shame to see another proud Canadian landmark in a complete derelict state.

Pride of ownership in my first bike

    Cheers Tim B.

    1. Bought mine in 76 for $200 American as a college student in Indianapolis. Six years later, living in Evanston just north of Chicago I had it appraised for 350. Two days later it was stolen, I suspected always that the bike shop owner was in on it. He definitely got excited upon seeing it. Best bike I ever rode, wouldn't mind finding another from the same era

Also has emblem on the front saying Made in Tokyo. Paid one hundred dollars Canadian. Is that a good/fair price?

  92. First, thank you for this site. I’ve had my Sekine (Made in Japan) for nearly /5 years. Not a whole lot of research to be done out there. w87748, the crazy green no one likes. I’ve done some mods over the years but it’s getting period part replacements. I have a Peugeot that will be sacrificing the stem, handlebars, brake cables and front derailleur. What’cha got for that serial?

  93. Hi all! I recently stumbled on a Sekine for free on the curb of a house going up for sale, in Ottawa. As a result, I don’t have any information on its history. It looks to me like just about everything is probably original. I was told by the homeowner that it had been sitting in a basement for a long time. I wish I knew how to share a couple pictures here! It’s a 10-speed “men’s” road bike, with drop bars and “suicide brake levers”.

Info requested in the blog post:
    Serial No. 4291 F6
    It has a chrome-tipped fork.
The frame does not have chrome-tipped ends.
I would guess the dropouts are stamped, but I don’t know how to tell.
It is beige or tan in colour, with a slightly metallic paint.
It has clamp-on cable guides (Shimano and shiny/polished) on the down tube (leading to the derailleurs); But braze-on guides on the top tube, for the rear brake.
Head badge is CS Jewel - black diamond with CS in a circle in the middle and one white jewel in the top corner.
Down Tube Decaling is SEKINE in the modern font, in black.
The main Seat Tube Crest Decal is absent - it may have been removed by the previous owner.
There is a Made In Canada sticker at the bottom front of the seat tube. It is gold with black lettering.
    I don’t see a CroMo tubing sticker.

    Some other info:
The friction shift levers are mounted on the stem.
It has centre-pull brakes, with quick release levers.
Front reflector is big and circular Cat-Eye Japan, mounted near the ball race of the stem. RR-250-WZ
Rear reflector is big and circular Cat-Eye Japan, mounted on the rear brake bolt. RR-250-WZ
Wheel reflectors are oversized, curved rectangles (yellow in front, red in rear). Also Cat-Eye Japan RR-570.
The seat is black imitation leather with diagonal quilting imprinted. No springs under seat. Underside of seat says Hsiang Li Taiwan Nylon 6 Material. (This might not be original.)

Here are a lot of the parts with markings on them that I could find. Info is thanks to the Vintage Component Dating Link in the initial post.
